How fast can a nail grow

A broken fingernail can seem to take forever to grow out if you're an adult. Children and young teens are the ones who get a lucky break -- their nails heal and grow back much faster. In fact, many parents can attest to cutting a squirming child's nails almost every other day. When it comes to nail growth, age and health play an important role.

Nails are made of a protein called keratin, and their growth is affected by several different factors, including age and health. Children's nails grow quickly until puberty, when growth slows to 50 percent of its previous rate [source: Robb-Nicholson]. Pregnant women also experience accelerated nail growth -- hormones boost metabolism and increase circulation, which causes nails and hair to grow more quickly. On the other hand, illnesses and certain drugs, such as chemotherapy, can slow nail growth or even cause nails to fall off [source: Murkoff].

Fingernails grow about three to four times faster than toenails. The nails on your dominant hand grow faster than those on your other hand, and nails grow faster on your longest fingers as well. Fingernails also grow more quickly in the summer than in the winter -- scientists aren't sure why, but one theory is that nails that are used more often and exposed to the elements grow faster [source: Binghamton University].

So how fast do the average adult's nail  grow ? The simple answer is that fingernails grow about one-tenth of an inch (3 millimeters) a month. If you lose a fingernail, it will take four to six months to regrow completely. Toenails take a year to a year and a half to grow from cuticle to tip [source: Robb-Nicholson]. If you notice a change in your nails or their growth rate, see your doctor.

How flights fly

How do planes fly?

Forces acting on a flying plane: thrust, weight, drag, and lift

If you've ever watched a jet plane taking off or coming in to land, the first thing you'll have noticed is the noise of the engines. Jet engines, which are long metal tubes burning a continuous rush of fuel and air, are far noisier (and far more powerful) than traditional propeller engines. You might think engines are the key to making a plane fly, but you'd be wrong. Things can fly quite happily without engines, as gliders (planes with no engines), paper planes, and indeed gliding birds readily show us.

Photo: Four forces act on a plane in flight. When the plane flies horizontally, lift from the wings exactly balances the plane's weight. But the other two forces do not balance: the thrust from the engines pushing forward always exceeds the drag (air resistance) pulling the plane back. That's why the plane moves through the air. Photo by Kemberly Dawn Groue courtesy of US Air Force.

If you're trying to understand how planes fly, you need to be clear about the difference between the engines and the wings and the different jobs they do. A plane's engines are designed to move it forward at high speed. That makes air flow rapidly over the wings, which throw the air down toward the ground, generating an upward force called lift that overcomes the plane's weight and holds it in the sky. So it's the engines that move a plane forward, while the wings move it upward.

Diagram showing Newton's third law of motion applied to the wings and engines of a plane.

Photo: Newton's third law of motion explains how the engines and wings work together to make a plane move through the sky. The force of the hot exhaust gas shooting backward from the jet engine pushes the plane forward. That creates a moving current of air over the wings. The wings force the air downward and that pushes the plane upward. Photo by Samuel Rogers (with added annotations by explainthatstuff.com) courtesy of US Air Force. Read more about how engines work in our detailed article on jet engines.

How do wings make lift?

Airfoils

Okay, so the wings are the key to making something fly—but how do they work? In most science books, you'll read that airplane wings have a curved upper surface and a flatter lower surface, making a cross-sectional shape called an airfoil (or aerofoil, if you're British):

Photo showing airfoil wing on the NASA Centurion solar-powered plane.
Photo: An airfoil wing has a curved upper surface and a flat lower surface. This is the wing on NASA's solar-powered Centurion plane. Photo by Tom Tschida courtesy of NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.

When air rushes over the curved upper wing surface, it has to travel further and go slightly faster than the air that passes underneath. According to a basic theory of physics called Bernoulli's law, fast-moving air is at lower pressure than slow-moving air, so the pressure above the wing is lower than the pressure below, creating the lift that holds the plane up. Although this explanation of how wings work is widely repeated, it's not the whole story. If it were the only factor involved, planes couldn't fly upside down. Flipping a plane over would produce "downlift" and send it crashing to the ground!

Indeed it is not just the portrait photos, but attached is a picture of Gandhi. This picture was taken as a portrait of Gandhi face.

See How Things Have Changed From The 90s

The 90s. Ah! That time was an age of naivety, innocence, learning and most importantly, growing. Right from watching cartoons on Cartoon Network to an endless struggle to maintain an ink pen correctly! Also, acting obediently all day long so that our mothers would allow us to go out in the evening was such a common thing. And now, things are completely different. We don’t get to witness any of those things. It’s all easy and changed to such a level that the 90s seem like a bygone era.

Cheryl Mina Sampat Jadav has come up with some posters that can help you compare how every word has evolved in its meaning..Check them out..

Myths You Believe Because of TV and Movies

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e all see a lot of movies and we believe some points  without knowing its true fact, here are some Myths You Believe Because of TV and Movies  till this age.

[tie_slideshow]

[tie_slide] 1 of 7 |

YOU HAVE TO WAIT 24 HOURS TO FILE A MISSING PERSONS REPORT

For some reason, TV and movies keep telling us that a person has to be missing for 24 hours before the police will file a report. In the real world, police actually consider the first 24-48 hours of any case as the most important. There's a much higher chance that the missing person can be tracked down in this time period. Police always take action for missing children, but adults often disappear on purpose so those cases are usually taken less seriously. [/tie_slide]

[tie_slide] 2 of 7 |

SILENCERS MAKE GUNS NEARLY SILENT

Movies and TV shows have convinced us that a "silenced" gun makes a quiet whistling noise when it fires. The truth is that it still sounds like a gunshot, but the volume is slightly lower and it sounds more like a pop than a bang. It makes a lot of sense when you know that silencers are actually called "supressors" by real gun owners. They are mainly used to protect the hearing of the owner while firing, not make them silent. [/tie_slide]

[tie_slide] 3 of 7 |

CARS ALWAYS EXPLODE

Almost ever single action movie ever made features a scene where a car explodes into a giant fireball. Real-life cars are designed with safety as a top priority and can withstand just about any reasonable impact. In the very worst crashes, a car might catch on fire, but almost never explodes. "Mythbusters" even proved that shooting the gas tank with a bullet under the perfect circumstances won't make it explode. [/tie_slide]
[tie_slide] 4 of 7 |

TRACING A PHONE CALL TAKES MINUTES

Many years ago, the phone system was not computerized and relied on switchboards to connect calls. It would take the police a few minutes to determine where the call was routed from, which was often depicted on screen. The problem is that movies and TV shows still act like this is a thing. In modern times, a location is attached to a phone call the instant that it connects, and it doesn't matter if it's a cell phone or landline. Whether you hang up after 10 seconds or 10 minutes, the police can find you. [/tie_slide]

[tie_slide] 5 of 7 |

LOCKS ARE EASILY DESTROYED BY SHOOTING THEM

You've been lead to believe that as long as you have a gun, you can break through any lock by shooting it. In the real world, bullets don't just work like magic keys. Shooting a lock from point blank range would send out shrapnel that would likely injure the shooter. In addition, most handguns don't fire a large enough bullet and don't have enough power to bust through a metal lock. That's why police use a high-powered shotgun to breach doors, and even then they don't shoot locks directly. [/tie_slide]

[tie_slide] 6 of 7 |

DEFIBRILLATORS BRING PEOPLE BACK TO LIFE

The defibrillator is a staple of medical drama shows. The patient flatlines, so the doctors grab the the metal paddles, says "clear", and then miraculously shocks the victim back to life. If this has always seemed to good to be true, that's because defibrillators don't really work this way. The electrical shock that this useful tool provides is delivered to someone starting to go into cardiac arrest, not after their heart stops. The shock is just meant to reset the heart to a normal rhythm. [/tie_slide]

[tie_slide] 7 of 7|

CHLOROFORM KNOCKS PEOPLE OUT INSTANTLY

Chloroform is a favorite tool of movie spies and villains to incapacitate their enemy without killing them. Just by holding a rag soaked in the chemical up to a person's face, they pass out for hours. In reality, it takes about five straight minutes of inhaling chloroform to knock somebody out. Even then, they must receive a constant dose to stay asleep and will suffocate unless their head is propped up.[/tie_slide]

MULTIPLICATION OF ANY TWO NUMBERS, LIES BETWEEN 11 AND 19

Let me explain this rule by taking examples
13*19 = (13+9)*10 + (3*9) = 220 + 27 = 247
Means add first number and last digit of the second number take zero in the third place of this number then add product of last digit of the two numbers in it.

EXAMPLE.

18*14 = (18+4)*10 + (8*4) = 220 + 32 = 252

MULTIPLICATION OF 11 WITH ANY NUMBER OF 3 DIGITS.

Let me explain this rule by taking examples
1. 352*11 = 3---(3+5)---(5+2)---2 = 3872
Means insert the sum of first and second digits, then sum of second and third digits between the two terminal digits of the number
2. 213*11 = 2---(2+1)---(1+3)---3 = 2343

EXAMPLE.

Here an extra case arises

Consider the following examples for that

1) 329*11 = 3--- (3+2) +1--- (2+9-10) ---9 = 3619

Means, if sum of two digits of the number is greater than 10, then add 1 to previous digit and subtract 10 to the associated digit.

2) 758*11 = 7+1---(7+5-10)+1---(5+8-10)---8 = 8338

MAGICAL DIVISION RULE FOR 2

If a number is divisible by two it will end in an even number or a 0.

EXAMPLE.

For example

28964

given number end with 2 then it will be divisible by 2.

and

89450

given number end with 0 it will also be divisible by 2.

GOLDEN DIVISION RULE FOR 3

If a number is divisible by three the sum of its digits will be divisible by 3.

EXAMPLE.

372 = 3 + 7 + 2 = 12

A corollary of this is that any number made by rearranging the digits of a number divisible by 3 will also be divisible by 3.

EXCEPTIONAL DIVISION RULE FOR 4

If a number is divisible by four the last two digit are divisible by 4 (or are zeros).

EXAMPLE.

45624

last two digit is 24

24 is divisible by 4 then 45624 is divisible by 4.

INCREDIBLE DIVISION RULE FOR 5

If a number is divisible by five the last digit will be 5 or 0.

EXAMPLE.

48905

last digit is 5 then 48905 is divisible by 5

and

56890

last digit is 0 then 56890 is also divisible by 5

PHENOMENAL DIVISION RULE FOR 6

If a number is divisible by six the last digit will be even and the sum of the digit divisible by 3.

EXAMPLE.

46536

last digit is 6 (even) and

sum of digit

4+6+5+3+6 = 24

24 is divisible by 3

then 46536 is divisible by 6.

EXCLUSIVE DIVISION RULE FOR 8

If a number is divisible by eight the last three digits are divisible by 8

EXAMPLE.

4857248

last three digits are 248

248/8 = 31

Then 4857248 is divisible by 8

ASTONISHING DIVISION RULE FOR 9

If a number is divisible by nine the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.

EXAMPLE.

8916345

Sum of the digit

8+9+1+6+3+4+5 = 36

36/9 = 4

number 8916345 is divisible by 9

STUPENDOUS DIVISION RULE FOR 10

If a number is divisible by ten it ends with a 0.

EXAMPLE.

45683750

last digit is 0

then number 45683750 is divisible by 10.

AWESOME DIVISION RULE FOR 11

If a number is divisible by eleven the difference between the sum of the digits in the even places and the sum of the digits in the odd places is 11 or 0.

EXAMPLE.

23485 is shown to be divisible by 11 because

2 + 4 + 5 = 11

3 + 8 = 11

11 - 11 = 0

and

and 60852 is shown to be divisible by 11 because

6 + 8 + 2 = 16

0 + 5 = 5

16 - 5 = 11

LARGEST CALCULATION (9^9)^9

Ninth power of the ninth power of nine is the largest in the world of number that can be expressed with just 3 digit. No one has been able to compute this yet. The very task is staggering to the mind

EXAMPLE.

The answer to this number will contain 369 million digits. And to read it normally it would take more than a year. To write down the answer, you would require 1164 miles of paper.

WHY 1 IS NOT PRIME NO ?

If one is allowed as a prime, then any number could be written as a product of primes in many ways.

EXAMPLE.

24 = 1*2*2*2*3

or 24 = 1*1*2*2*2*3

or 24 = 1*1*1*1*1*2*2*2*3

The fact that factoring into primes can only be done in one way is important in mathematics.

FAMILIARITY WITH CARDINAL AND ORDINAL NO

An ordinal number given us the rank or order of a particular object and the cardinal number states how many objects are in the group of collection.

EXAMPLE.

Fourth - an ordinal number

Four - a cardinal number

EVOLUTION OF + AND - SIGN

The + symbol came from Latin word et meaning and. The two symbols were used in the fifteenth century to show that boxes of merchandise were overweight or underweight.

EXAMPLE.

For overweight they used the sign + and for underweight the sign -.

Within about 40 years accountants and mathematicians started using them.

FASCINATING NUMBER 3

There are a couple of strange things about the first few prime numbers,

153 = 1^3 + 3^3 + 5^3

And 3 and 5 can also both be expressed as the difference between two square

3 = 2^2 - 1^2
5 = 3^3 - 2^2

EXAMPLE.

The secret steps in the 3-times table are very simple

3*1 = 3 ---------------- 3

3*2 = 6 ---------------- 6

3*3 = 9 ---------------- 9

3*4 = 12 --------- 1+2 = 3

3*5 = 15 --------- 1+5 = 6

3*6 = 18 --------- 1+8 = 9

3*7 = 21 --------- 2+1 = 3

3*8 = 24 --------- 2+4 = 6

3*9 = 27 --------- 2+7 = 9

3*10 = 30 -------- 3+0 = 3

3*11 = 33 -------- 3+3 = 6

3*12 = 36 -------- 3+6 = 9

Again the pattern of the secret steps recurs whatever stage you carry the table up to - try it and check for yourself.

AMAZING NUMBER 4

With number 4 the secret steps in the multiplication tables become a little more intricate.

4*1 = 4 ----------------------------------- 4
4*2 = 8 ---------------------------- 8
4*3 = 12 ------------------ 1+2 = --------- 3
4*4 = 16 ------------------ 1+6 = -- 7
4*5 = 20 ------------------ 2+0 = --------- 2
4*6 = 24 ------------------ 2+4 = -- 6
4*7 = 28 ----2+8=10---- 1+0 = ----------- 1
4*8 = 32 ------------------ 3+2 = -- 5
4*9 = 36 ------------------ 3+6 = --------- 9
4*10 = 40 ----------------- 4+0 = -- 4
4*11 = 44 ----------------- 4+4 = --------- 8
4*12 = 48 ---4+8=12 ------- 1+2=-- 3
4*13 = 52 ----------------- 5+2 = --------- 7
4*14 = 56 ---5+6=11-------- 1+1=-- 2
4*15 = 60 ----------------- 6+0 = --------- 6
4*16 = 64 ---6+4=10-------- 1+0=-- 1

EXAMPLE.

At first the sums of the digits look like a jumble of figure, but choose at random any sequence of numbers and multiply them by 4 and you will see the pattern emerge of two interlinked columns of digits in descending order.

2160*4 = 8640 -- 8+6+4+0 = 18 ----------- 1+8 = ---- 9

2161*4 = 8644 -- 8+6+4+4 = 22 ----------- 2+2 = 4

2162*4 = 8648 -- 8+6+4+8 = 26 ----------- 2+6 = ---- 8

2163*5 = 8652 -- 8+6+5+2 = 21 ----------- 2+1 = 3

2164*4 = 8656 -- 8+6+5+6 = 25 ----------- 2+5 = ---- 7

2165*4 = 8660 -- 8+6+6+0 = 20 ----------- 2+0 = 2

2166*4 = 8664 -- 8+6+6+4 = 24 ----------- 2+4 = ---- 6

2167*4 = 8668 -- 8+6+6+8 = 28 -- 2+8=10 - 1+0 = 1

2168*4 = 8672 -- 8+6+7+2 = 23 ----------- 2+3 = ---- 5

CAPTIVATING SUM

That it is easier to add round numbers like 40 or 50 than numbers ending in 7, 8, or 9. If you round these awkward numbers up by adding 3, 2 or 1 the calculation is not much longer, and is easier.
Instead of
49+52 = 101
think of it as
50 (that is 49+1) + 52 = 102-1 = 101

Other example
If you are adding
215
426
513
112
328
----

First add the figure in the hundreds column and hold the total, 1500, in your head. Now add the total of the tens column, 70, to it. To this total 1570 add the sum of the units column, 24, to arrive at the final total of 1594

EXAMPLE.

Even when you use pencil and paper carrying error can occur. Here is a method of working which makes them much less likely.

----9845674

----7465387

----8236472

----4578348

----3847568

----3569841

----------------

----4200960

---3334233

--37543290

Another method of avoiding carrying also involves adding each column separately. the column totals are set out in a staggered line, the units figure of the second column below the tens figure of the first, the units figure of the third column below the tens figure of the second ans so on. the column totals are then added to given the final answer. Here is an example

----962853 ----------- 19

----524861 ---------- 22

----212346 --------- 24

----401258 -------- 13

----864321 ------- 28

Hair Growth Rate

It depends. If you just got a really bad hair cut, then hair seems like it does not grow at all, while hair that you have to shave every day seems to grow like a weed!

Ignoring these perceptual differences, human hair seems to grow at a pretty consistent rate of about half a millimeter or so per day, or about half an inch every month (this study quotes a specific rate of 0.44 mm per day). It may grow faster or slower depending on your age, your genetics and your hormonal state (pregnancy seems to have an affect on hair), but half a millimeter per day is a good average.

What this means is that the maximum growth rate for hair is about 6 inches (15 cm) per year. If you have short hair and are thinking, "It sure would be nice if I had hair down to my waist," then you are going to have about a four-year wait.

TMC in dam measurements

We all read and heard a word during raining seasons TMC, what does it means..? Read below

TMC is a measurement of volume. It is an abbreviation of Thousand Million Cubic feet. This is equal to 283.17 megalitres.

TMC =Ten Million Cubic feet Million = 1000000( In new SI-International system -Mega-M)
Ten Million=10000000 1 feet = 12X 2.54 cm =30.48cm =0.3048m

1 cft = 1 feet X 1feet X 1feet = 0.3048 X 0.3048 X 0.3048 metre cube (m3)

1 m3 = 1/(0.3048 X 0.3048X0.3048) = 35.31466672 cft

1Mm3 =35.31466672X 1000000 cft

1 Mm3 =3.531466672 TMC

1TMC = 1/3.531466672 Mm3 = 0.283168465 Mm3 nearly = 0.28317 Mm3= 0.28317X 1000 M litres
