How flights fly

How do planes fly?

Forces acting on a flying plane: thrust, weight, drag, and lift

If you've ever watched a jet plane taking off or coming in to land, the first thing you'll have noticed is the noise of the engines. Jet engines, which are long metal tubes burning a continuous rush of fuel and air, are far noisier (and far more powerful) than traditional propeller engines. You might think engines are the key to making a plane fly, but you'd be wrong. Things can fly quite happily without engines, as gliders (planes with no engines), paper planes, and indeed gliding birds readily show us.

Photo: Four forces act on a plane in flight. When the plane flies horizontally, lift from the wings exactly balances the plane's weight. But the other two forces do not balance: the thrust from the engines pushing forward always exceeds the drag (air resistance) pulling the plane back. That's why the plane moves through the air. If you're trying to understand how planes fly, you need to be clear about the difference between the engines and the wings and the different jobs they do. A plane's engines are designed to move it forward at high speed. That makes air flow rapidly over the wings, which throw the air down toward the ground, generating an upward force called lift that overcomes the plane's weight and holds it in the sky. So it's the engines that move a plane forward, while the wings move it upward.

Photo: Newton's third law of motion explains how the engines and wings work together to make a plane move through the sky. The force of the hot exhaust gas shooting backward from the jet engine pushes the plane forward. That creates a moving current of air over the wings. The wings force the air downward and that pushes the plane upward. Photo by Samuel Rogers (with added annotations by explainthatstuff.com) courtesy of US Air Force. How do wings make lift?

Airfoils

Okay, so the wings are the key to making something fly—but how do they work? In most science books, you'll read that airplane wings have a curved upper surface and a flatter lower surface, making a cross-sectional shape called an airfoil (or aerofoil, if you're British):

When air rushes over the curved upper wing surface, it has to travel further and go slightly faster than the air that passes underneath. According to a basic theory of physics called Bernoulli's law, fast-moving air is at lower pressure than slow-moving air, so the pressure above the wing is lower than the pressure below, creating the lift that holds the plane up. Although this explanation of how wings work is widely repeated, it's not the whole story. If it were the only factor involved, planes couldn't fly upside down. Flipping a plane over would produce "downlift" and send it crashing to the ground!

ISPs cannot block Uber and Ola websites due to technical issues

We had reported earlier regarding block on cab-apps  now as a response to Department of Telecommunications order to block Delhi websites of Uber and Ola cab services, Internet Service providers plan to write to telecom department expressing their inability to adhere to the order due to some technical limitations.

“We can only block http sites and not the https sites as the latter have higher encryption codes,” Rajesh Chharia, the president of the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) said. “TaxiForSure website can be blocked as it is an http site”, he added. He also stated that the inability to block the websites were repeatedly communicated to the Government.

The sources further say that the Government had promised to set up a committee to observe the matter, but was not fulfilled. There also seems to exist a confusion within the telecom department about the new directive, with a few claiming that they are totally unaware of it.

Few newspapers report that the department itself tried to block the websites during March, but failed to proceed due to the strong encryption code. Government takes the stand that the taxi services are unlicensed radio taxis and that they do no adhere to the state law. Based on which, it asked to ban these services’ digital platforms. These services came under the scrutiny when an Uber driver raped a woman passenger in November 2014.

Uber, Ola and TaxiForSure mobile apps to get blocked

Delhi will soon be refrained from booking taxi through mobile apps and websites of Uber, Ola cabs and TaxiForSure. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has ordered the Internet Servie Providers (ISPs) to block their digital platforms (websites and mobile apps) immediately, as they failed to comply with orders from Delhi Transport office and also due to the deficiencies found in their license applications.

While they will be blocked in Delhi, the taxi services will continue to operate in other cities. ola-delhi-app A member of Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) confirmed the news. “We have been asked to block access to these sites under Section 69 A of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. And we will comply with the order,” said the member. In December 2014, taxi services like Uber and Ola submitted their applications to get license as per the amended radio taxi policy, after they were banned by the Government.

As a process, Delhi Transport office insisted the taxi services to submit an affidavit saying that they have complied with the ban before processing the applications. The taxi services failed to process this, following with the Delhi Transport department wrote to Ministry of Communications and Information technology seeking a block for the mobile apps and websites of taxi services. Subsequently, in January 2015, Delhi government also found deficiencies in the license applications filed by the taxi aggregators. The department found that Uber, which has formed a subsidiary Resource Expert India has not registered the company as a provider of public transport. Moreover, other requisites such as the undertaking for parking, a telephone number, an email address, and an address proof of its registered office, call centre arrangement details and details of feedback process were found missing. A week’s notice was issued to taxi services to file the missing details, which they failed to fulfil.
